Welcome to

Alderton Acorns

Pre-School and Toddlers Group

ABOUT Us

Alderton Acorns is a community not-for-profit organisation, set in the heart of Alderton, Gloucestershire and just a short distance from the local primary school. The Pre-School is Ofsted registered and provides a wide variety of educational resources and activities, to prepare children for their next stage into school life.

Whilst there is structure assigned to the daily running of the Pre-School, child-led play is very much encouraged. At Acorns we recognise the importance of providing children with a range of learning opportunities, which capture and engage their individual interests in a happy, safe and nurturing environment.

Early Years Foundation Stage framework (EYFS)

Alderton Acorns follows the Early Years Foundation Stage framework (EYFS). We use ‘in the moment planning’ on a weekly basis which enables us to use the children’s own ideas and interests to create fun and engaging activities, which support the individual learning and development of each child. To help you find out more about how your child learns and develops in the first five years, and how you can support this please read the ‘What to expect when guide’.

We believe that a child’s early years experiences should be exciting, engaging, happy, physical and most of all fun. We support children’s development by allowing them to experience opportunities to learn and play in a safe and happy environment.

To find out more about the EYFS and how you can help and support your child’s learning, please read the Parents Guide to the EYFS Framework

Our Staff

Stephanie Castle – Playlead

I am the playleader at Acorns and have worked in early years settings for over 12 years, taking a bit of time off to raise my 3 children in between. I have a range of qualifications including a Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education.
I absolutely love every aspect of my job and feel so lucky to be a part of an amazing organisation such as Acorns. I am extremely passionate about providing children with a safe,  nurturing, and happy environment, in which they can learn and develop their individual key skills
through a range of child-led activities and most importantly through play.

Suzy Webb – Deputy Playlead

I have had the pleasure of working for 11 years at Alderton Acorns, it is a unique and friendly group. I was a childminder for 7 years and have a level 3 qualification in childcare, along with all of the relevant up to date training. My background is in art and design and I love working with the children, helping them develop their ideas for arts and crafts activities. I also love all things ‘wildlife’ and environment related, working with the children growing and planting, as well as going on nature walks and bug hunts. I have lived in Alderton for 19 years and have raised my family here, enjoying the  friendly village community, the school and the wonderful Pre-School and toddler group.

Sian Tryner – Financial administrator and Pre-School assistant

I have been involved with Alderton Acorns for many years since my own 3 children were little and attended Pre-School. My role now is as Financial Administrator, taking care of anything money related as well as providing cover for staff absence. I am a trained infant and nursery teacher having worked in various schools in the UK as well as schools in Germany and Nigeria. I am a keen gardener and enjoy growing produce in my allotment and bringing that knowledge and enthusiasm for growing back into Preschool to share with the children. The children have enjoyed many walks to my allotment to dig for potatoes or marvel at the enormous pumpkins.

Our Acorns garden

garden

Here at Acorns we are very fortunate to have free flowing access to our wonderful outdoor space. This provides children with a safe outdoor area in which a wealth of physical and learning opportunities can take place. Many a pirate has walked the plank on our wooden pirate ship; the raised beds have seen the likes of Mr McGregor chasing Peter Rabbit, but have also been a place of awe and wonder in many a child’s eye as they watch the vegetables and flowers grow from seeds. Our outdoor role play resources provide a wonderful array of imaginative play and learning opportunities which the children can engage in freely at any time during the day. They can let their imagination take them on a journey around the garden and use the role play resources to support and assist them on this learning journey.

Toddler Group

Our fun and friendly toddler group runs every Friday 10am-12pm (term time only). It is open to all families and is a great way of socialising, meeting new families and most importantly having fun in a safe and happy setting. We provide a variety of activities and resources for babies and children to engage their interests, as well as offer them a range of learning and play opportunities. Families also have open access to our wonderful outside area, where the play and learning can continue in the fresh air. Each session includes unlimited teas and coffees as well as a sweet treat for adults. Each child will get a biscuit (or 2) and a choice of milk or water at snack time.

Toddler group cost (per session)

  • £2 for family attending with one child (including babies)
  • £2.50 for family attending with 2 or more children (including babies)

DON'T CHANGE BELOW HERE PLEASE

Alderton Acorns is a welcoming Pre-School that is run by experienced, passionate and enthusiastic staff. Whilst there is structure assigned to the running of the Pre-School, child-led play is widely encouraged to enhance your child’s confidence, self-esteem and communicative skills.

The staff at Acorns sympathise with that first big step towards independence for your child and also the emotions that brings to the parents/guardians. Rest assured that you and your child will be supported through this stage every step of the way.

ACTIVITIES

When we get the opportunity we like to meet the Rubbish lorry or see the fire engine.

My little boy has just finished his first year at Alderton Acorns, he absolutely loves it and can’t wait to return after the summer break. It’s a small, personal, community based setting but the staff are wonderful and the children enjoy the diverse range of activities and family environment. Thank you! 😊

Safe outdoor space

The children are fortunate to freely explore the safe, outdoor space that Acorns has to offer. Many a pirate has walked the plank on our wooden pirate ship; the raised beds have seen the likes of Mr McGregor chasing Peter Rabbit, but have also been a place of awe and wonder in many a child’s eye as they watch the vegetables and flowers grow from seed. The play houses have provided a stage for the well loved role play of Mums and Dads.
